STOP repression FREEDOM for Zoran Đajić

Bed bugs are devouring people who were put in jail for telling the truth. Zoran Đajić is now one of those people. Since the truth he revealed to us was so solid and informed, it was particularly painful to the corrupted and alienated leadership of the state. He pointed a finger to the high officials and threw light on the mechanism of greed that led to the loss of 16 lives.

Insects are the allies of the political power-holders in their vengeful offensive against the citizens. In repression! It is lamely cynical how misused and criminalized institutions – public prosecution and police – are labeling the hunt on Đajić as a combat against high-tech crime. No, this arrest doesn’t belong to such a “sophisticated” contemporary zone. It belongs to the medieval tyrannies and the age when serfs could not think of opposing lords.

They’re not prosecuting Đajić for posting something (unnecessary, wrong, stupid… doesn’t matter) on X. Also, they’ve not been keeping Lazar Dinić, Mladen Cvijetić, Marija Vasić, Lado Jovović, Davor Stefanović i Srđan Đurić in jail for saying something inappropriate in a private, illegally surveilled conversation. They’re taking revenge on them for what they were doing in public – in the public’s best interest.

Inflammatory language, online or anywhere in the public, is not helping democracy. However, the non-democratic, authoritarian government is punishing it only when it comes from those who criticize the ruling clique. The ruling party’s leaders and supporters are protected by impunity for spreading hate and panic. They’re not even being arrested for attacking lives and physical violence against peaceful citizens.

The executive branch (provisionally speaking – the principle of power division was violated a long time ago) is openly misusing the entire apparatus of the state to bully all of us they were supposed to serve – for exercising violence over people and laws.

We appeal to the citizens of Serbia to stand united, above all our differences, against the violence. We appeal to the foreign officials and international public not to ignore the rise of repression in Serbia. Not only our ideal of the rule of law is being violated here. Our existence is under attack.
